What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?

So often when I talk to people who are unhappy in their jobs they often say, “Yeah, but I don’t know what else I would do!” I remember feeling very much the same. I have worked in education for most of my professional life and to make a switch to something different can seem impossible and daunting. That was part of the reason why I started Chapter Be. I wanted to not only interview people who had made a change in their life in order to follow what they love, but also, selfishly, wanted to learn more about what sorts of careers were out there. What can you do when you leave the only field you have ever known?

I love hearing about the different jobs that people have, because it seems to open my mind to new and different ideas and possibilities. When I started to think about leaving my 9-5 education job, someone suggested that I just start paying close attention to what excites me. What bubbles to the top and just feels delicious to me when I walk by something or read something or listen to something. So, as I walked the streets of New York, traveled, listened to podcasts, read blogs – I tried to really keep track of what got my imagination and interests flowing. Some of those things stuck, and some of them fell into the back of my mind to make space for something new.

My favorite blog and yours, Design Sponge, recently launched a new section of their site – We Want Your Job. For those of you who might be exploring the idea of leaving your 9-5 to do something new and different, this might be a great place for you to start. It will allow you to read about different creative jobs that you might not know even existed! As you read about them – take note of what sounds delicious to you – something that you can say, “Yes – I could get up every morning and be so excited to do that!” It might just be the jumping off point that you need to get the juices flowing!
