6/100 || Today’s play was spending a few hours in one of my favorite places in Denver – Tattered Cover Bookstore! At first I thought I was going to read a book that I have been trying to get through for work, but then decided to just let my heart choose what I wanted to read! I was able to dive into some design eye candy c/o Domino magazine as well as Ariel Levy’s phenomenal book, The Rules Do Not Apply all while drinking a delicious blackberry Italian soda. I mean – a little slice of heaven, right there!
I’ve loved books for as long as I can remember. I am extremely lucky that I had parents who read to me when I was very little and a mother who instilled in my a true love for picture books. But, I first developed my love of reading around 4th grade due to Book It – mostly because I wanted a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut and getting those stickers on the chart hanging in my classroom satisfied all of the goal-oriented parts of me. But, as it turns out – I learned to love reading. I have several clear memories of my dad telling me to go to bed and hiding under my covers in order to finish a few more chapters. Then…grad school happened. It would be years after grad school before I was able to pick up a book again – just for the mere purpose of enjoying it.
Going into a book store or library brings out such a playful side of me. Today, I spent a good 30 minutes just looking at the endless shelves of stories, adventures, maps, love, dedication, art…you cannot help but feel possibility when you are surrounded by books. You think of all of the authors that live in that space – and whether or not it’s a good or bad book, the time and love that the person put into creating it is worth appreciating. Because what I learned in 4th grade is that books are the 2nd best way of experiencing an adventure – because I good author makes you feel like you are on one with them. Reading sparks ideas and creativity – and when you do it for pleasure – it is extremely playful. Today helped remind me the importance of doing something just because you love it – and, if Pizza Hut is still making personal pan pizzas, I wouldn’t say no…
