31/100 || Whenever I do my walks with #HarrietEthel, we tend to do the same two routes, which are essentially big loops. Yesterday, I decided to walk one of the loops in reverse. I know this might not sound like that big of a deal – but I saw it as an opportunity to take a small step to breaking up routine and monotony. And, as it turns out, I actually got lost!
I realized that I never really pay that close of attention to street names when I am walking – I just walk. In some ways this is nice, as you can really let your brain rest. But, it also does not allow for much newness. I found that I was paying attention way more and was more in-tune to what I was seeing. Even by approaching houses that I was familiar with from a different direction meant that I saw them in a new light or from a fresh perspective. It was crazy to all the sudden realize that I wasn’t entirely sure where I was. It did not last too long – but it opened my eyes and made me so much more aware. I also discovered a street that I have never walked down before!
I remember someone once telling me that changing your routine – i.e. how you drive to work or which grocery store you go to – can really help you be more open to change. You do not necessarily need to travel to far-away places to have diverse experiences – but instead try to create simple ways to have them even in your hometown. It was pretty surprising to me the affect that this simple change had on me and my daily walk experience. It also allowed space for small surprises to appear! Noticing things that I maybe have become so accustomed to – I don’t even take notice any longer. How can we be playful in our routines – changing them up to let surprises in?!
