Some days you’re the bug, some days you’re the windshield. – Steven Tyler
My sister sent me this video and my first reaction was – yeah, that describes how I feel some days. But my second thought was – how amazing is this child?! He keeps falling – in the rain – and never does he just lay there and cry, but instead keeps getting up and trying. He doesn’t even look frustrated. He just does it.
It made me think about that point in our lives when we all learn to walk. We haven’t been in the world for that long, all we know is that we want it, so we go after it. We keep trying even though we fall down, get knocked around and don’t see results right away. Yes, we are closer to the ground so we don’t have quite as far to fall, but the point is that we just keep doing it until we get it. It is pretty amazing to watch and see how if one attempt doesn’t work, then they approach it another way – using a prop, like a table, to help them up or sometimes resorting to crawling again when they get too tired. But – forward movement, always.
How can we channel that same urge, desire and gumption we all had when we were infants learning how to walk? How do we not let pitfalls, a rainy day or gravity stand in the way of our ultimate goal? Yes, some days we are the bug and other days we are the windshield, but the point is that we just keep moving forward. That’s all we can do.
