The Ideal Intersection?

finding your purpose

Your professional purpose – the holy grail, as some might say. And – you can’t find the holy grail overnight. For awhile you might have to be okay with a vocation or profession, as it covers some of the things that you need, but that does not mean that you can’t continue to work toward your purpose. Some are lucky enough to happen upon their purpose at a young age, and some might not find it until later in life. And yet others might discover that their purpose changes over time. All is okay. So, while you are on the path to your purpose, remember to ask yourself:

  1. Do I love this?
  2. Am I great at doing this?
  3. Can I get paid for doing this?/Do I want to get paid for doing this?
  4. Does the world need this?

One reader made the following alterations to the chart:

To me this is the difference between our overall purpose and our professional purpose. We need to remember that our professional purpose is just one component of who we are and how we want to be in this world. Yet, it is a part that takes up a large amount of our time, so why not have it be something that you are great at, the world needs and can pay for you to live in this world? Our overall purpose on this world is just to “love it” – which to me is the essence of just being. It is living a life of gratitude and focusing on the now. When you are doing these things, it is that much easier to answer the other three questions.

What are your thoughts? Do you need all four when seeking your professional purpose or is loving it enough?
