Changing the World By Being Themselves

“A lot of people wait for someone else to tell them it’s okay to start doing something or that you have to be allowed to do this. We create that. You just have to start. It might not be the thing, but that thing will lead to the next thing, will lead to the next thing. No one’s going to give you permission…it’s all within your power, so what do you want to do?” – Abbi Jacobson

Anyone that knows me well, knows that I love Amy Poehler. Not just because she is funny and fabulous, but because she is doing such great and meaningful work outside of her acting career. If you don’t already follow her organization Smart Girls – stop what you are doing and check it out now. Poehler approaches her work from such a positive, inclusive space, and I do believe that it has not only inspired many but is also helping to change the landscape of how young women see themselves and interact with the world. Her professional career has been in a mostly male-dominated, money-centric industry, yet she continues to create things that prove it doesn’t have to be that way. Her work inspires me and reminds me that we can indeed “change the world by being ourselves.” Chapter Be agrees and gives a big ol’ “Hell Yeah!”

This interview with the women of Broad City – Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson – is spectacular. Poehler is one of the producers of Broad City, which is another example of how she is empowering other women in her industry. Ilana and Abbi are pretty impressive in their own right, though. I love what they have to share in this video – especially the part about how you need to enjoy the process of what you are doing and forget about the end product. They are amazing examples of how to continue to follow your passion and be relentless. When they were not getting the parts they wanted – they created them for themselves. The web series started in 2009 and was picked up by Comedy Central in 2014. Proof that things don’t just happen over night but take time, effort, commitment and patience. Many thanks to Poehler, Glazer and Jacobson for being bright lights of inspiration!
