We Protect What We Fall in Love With

I’m a girl who likes a deal just as much as the next gal, but I have to be honest and say I never understood the appeal of Black Friday. It seems so excessive, and I actually think “crowds!” before I think “deals!” Plus, the focus toward such a material holiday season has become less-and-less appealing to me the older I get. It seems contradictory to what this time of year is supposed to be all about.

Everyone is entitled to spend the day after Thanksgiving however they damn-well please, but the above video by Louie Schwartzberg, with the words of Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, serves as a reminder that our thanks and gratitude should not be reserved just for the last Thursday in November. I believe it is true that we protect what we love – so we need to start falling in love with all we have to be grateful for, instead of looking to material items to fill that void. Let’s protect each other and our experiences together instead of things. Instead of waiting in line at a Best Buy, have a piece of leftover pumpkin pie with your grandmother. I can tell you that since I have lost my grandparents, I remember the special moments and conversations I had with them over any Christmas present I bought them. Let’s create moments of gratitude instead of killing one another for a large screen TV. Mmmkay?
