The Magic is in the Process

Jane ni Dhulchaointigh: The Magic Is in The Process from 99U on Vimeo.

“Making stuff happen is really fuckin’ difficult, and it’s important that we talk about that because A) people might give up and B) actually all of the magic and all of the beauty happens in the process and not in the finished product.”

Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh is the inventor and CEO of sugru, a self-setting rubber for fixing, modifying and improving your stuff. Over 285,000 people in 138 countries are using it to make their stuff work better. As she explains, “The word sugru is the Irish word for play and that’s what it’s all about—getting people to have a playful attitude toward life and to know that they can do something about their problems without having to wait around on others.”

In her talk at 99U she explains her six-year process of going from being a design student to and an inventor and the CEO of her own company. I greatly appreciate her honesty and the fact that she explicitly states that it was not easy. The process of creating something includes a lot of hard work, doubts and re-tries. Ní Dhulchaointigh spent time getting lost in the idea, went toward something that she was passionate about even though she wasn’t an expert in it and recognizes that she couldn’t have done it alone – business = community.

Her creation did not happen over night. It was a six year process.

Time. Patience. Passion. Hard Work.
